It is no secret the environmental impact trucking has on planet Earth. Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day reminds us to reflect on our environmental impact and the ways we at J. Boren & Sons Trucking and JBS Logistics can protect the planet we share. While trucks move over 70% of the nation’s freight, this also contributes to carbon emissions and fuel consumption.
Inspecting Earth Day on the Road
Trucking keeps shelves stocked, hospitals supplied, and communities connected. But that does not come without environmental challenges. Fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and wear on infrastructure are all part of the equation. This is one reason it is important to innovate and adapt – not just for business, but for the health of the planet.
Changes in Trucking: How Trucking is Becoming Greener
Earth Day is a chance to spotlight the efforts within our industry to reduce environmental footprint. Here are a few ways the trucking world is changing to become greener:
– Fleet modernization: I know what you are thinking. When you think of semi-trucks, you think of the big gas guzzlers. Particularly, the beautiful Peterbilt 389. But times are changing, and so are what the fleet companies have on the roads! Many companies are investing in fuel efficient trucks and alternative fuel vehicles like electric or hybrid models.
– Route Optimization: now with the help of advanced logistics tech, we’re reducing unnecessary miles on the road, which is cutting both fuel and use of emissions.
– Idle Reduction Programs: idling wastes fuel and adds to air pollution. More companies are moving to implementing smart idling solutions for as low as $50 a month.
– Sustainable Practices in Warehousing: from solar powered facilities to energy efficient lighting, companies are thinking green beyond the cab and trailer.
